Zooming with Friends: Rina Kim
Welcome to the new feature “Zooming with Friends,” where I have a fun photoshoot via Zoom with my friends, and they answer some questions on how they're holding up and give us some suggestions on what to eat, drink and watch.
Name: Rina Kim
Location: Greenpoint, Brooklyn
Do you live alone/who do you live with?
I live with my best friend Kath and our dog’s Marbles and Roosevelt
Are you working?
Not Currently - I’m a Digital Product Designer and the last place I worked at was an e-commerce startup.
What show has been giving you life during quarantine?
New Girl (Jessica Day as the incredibly optimistic, yet sometimes unrealistic gem is what’s been giving me a positive outlook on life rn) & Supernatural (two hot brothers who hunt ghosts, demons, and all things…’ unnatural’? Yes, pls.)
Song everyone should listen to?
Rain on me - Lady Gaga (ft Ariana Grande) BUT also, Tina Turner - The Best
What’s the outfit you cannot wait to wear when the shelter-in-place is over?
Summer dresses with heels. Lots of open shoulders, lots of open toes.
What was the best cocktail you made?
Though I love a nice cold cocktail, I usually don’t make them at home. I just drink liquors neat.
What's been the lowest point for you during the shelter-in-place?
Where do I start? Playing phone with the Department of Labor hours on end for almost 3 weeks or applications being put on pause due to pandemic hiring freezes? Regardless, these low points have been lessons and a high point always follows even if it takes some time. As Miley Cyrus would say ‘It’s the climb. Keep on moving. Keep climbing.’ Yes, I am quoting a damn good song by Ms. Cyrus.
First restaurant you are going to when it’s open?
Chez Ma Tante
Any happy surprises about your current situation?
I’m getting better at facing things that make me uncomfortable. And waking up around 6 am to go chill at parks with just me and Marbles.
What is your favorite way to keep in touch with people right now?
Phone calls. Something I didn’t normally do before, so it’s been nice.
What is the best recipe you have made?
Cajun Beef and Grits - It’s slow-cooked beef in a cajun seasoning that goes on top of cheesy grits. I’m not sure where I found the recipe but so glad I found it. I think I made about 10 servings worth, but I never got sick of it. Every bite tasted so savory, so juicy, so silky, so tantalizing.
What habits are you forming now that you will bring into the future?
So much! I’ve learned to find joy with my solitude, peace with quiet moments, exercise patience, and be flexible when things don’t go quite as planned. Whenever I veer to thoughts that are negative or upsetting, I have been challenging myself to find what I can do that’ll bring the opposite of those feelings.
3 words to describe your current situation:
I am hopeful.
Thank you Rina!!
